We Cant Stop Dual-Threat QBs

Coaching is a game of efficiency. Don’t run too much, or you’ll be tired. Don’t run too little, or you’re out of shape. Don’t tackle too much or you’re risking injury… too little, well you get the point. We have to find the best way to get the most out of the talent on our team.

On this episode Joe and Daniel discuss the way they get the most out of their players. They talk about setting up a depth chart, identifying the right guys for the position, and getting kids to play a position they may not want to.

Setting up Your Depth Chart for Success

  • The best QB in the spread offense may not be the best QB in the Flex Bone. Setup your Depth Chart for the success of the system you’re using
  • Setup your Depth Chart the way it will really occur in a game. A Starting Right Guard may just slide over to replace an injured Center… NOT THE “BACKUP CENTER”
  • The “12th man,” or the “Universal Backup,” can fit into any system as long as you’re configuring your system correctly.

Identify the Right Players for Each Position

  • Kids need to be placed in a position to maximize their strengths, and hide their weaknesses
  • Don’t put players in their “College Position,” unless the rest of the depth chart is filled out with strong players
  • You need to identify 3-5 traits of each position, and then fit the kids in their strongest spot.
  • Ensure you’re practicing the “Game Time” depth chart.

Get Players to Play a Position They Don’t Want to Play

  • “If I try hard enough, I can win the starting QB position”
  • Kids don’t understand, because they don’t have a coach's brain, they’ll choose to be a backup QB over a starting Slot WR.
