The Football Coaching Podcast with Joe Daniel
In a game of inches, giving up “busts” or Big Plays can quickly become a mistake too big to overcome. The other sideline earns a paycheck too, so you likely can’t stamp out big plays altogether, but you can get your team to limit them enough.
On this episode Joe and Daniel discuss how to limit big plays against your defense by simplifying your scheme, cutting out the wanted complexity, and getting your players to consistently be in a place to make a play.
• Explosive plays are “a bust” or worse
• Three ways you give up explosive plays
• Missed tackles
• Blown run fits
• Busted coverage
• Simplify as much as YOU need:
• IF you’re giving up 25 TDs to busted coverage… simplify your coverage
• You can always simplify down to Spot Drop Cover 3
• Simplify your run fits, stop doing all the “things” on the line/LBs
• Living in Base is never a bad thing
• Many times, the Jimmys and Joes make the complexity look like it works
• Every kid can be put into position to be successful
• Regardless of what your kids look like, they can follow simple rules to be in the best possible place on any given play
• You’re going to play teams that absolutely have you outmanned, and you need to understand how to pull levers to give yourself a chance.
