The Football Coaching Podcast with Joe Daniel
Special Teams, the Third Side of the Ball, can be a secret weapon or a glaring flaw for your team this year. If you keep chasing different schemes week after week, or year after year, you’ll never learn to problem solve within your own game.
On this episode Joe and Daniel discuss how to simplify your Special Teams, teaching each team one way for the whole season, getting rules put in to place so your players can use them to problem solve.
• You have to win the hidden yardage battle.
• If you’re kicking the ball to the best player on the oppositions team, and he’s negating your kicks and kickoffs, you need to rethink your Special Teams game plan
• Front load the time by installing one scheme for each Special Team, then you save time later in the season.
• Because you’re only running one scheme, you can hammer out the rules and live by them
• Adjust very little to each week’s attack
• Don’t change the scheme from week to week to week
• Simplify, celebrate, sharpen - the SCS method, allows you to get better as the season progresses
• Weaponize your system by sharpening it as the season goes on.
• My Players Won’t Buy In to the System
• We Don’t Have Enough Players to Win
• We Aren’t Tough Enough to Win
