The screen game is a mighty weapon wielded by offensive coordinators across the land. But, it doesn’t have to be your demise anymore.
In this episode Joe and Daniel discuss the ways to counter screen plays next season by practicing the screen retrace drill, using the system you’re already in, and reading and reacting to any and every screen with your fundamentals.
Screen Retrace Drill
- What’s missed, coaches always try to fit the screen with their backers
- If everyone “bites” on the screen, you SHOULD lose
- The best thing you can do is add Screen Retrace to your DL’s run/pass drill
Defend Screen Plays with Your Existing Defense
- Man coverage does not fix this in the end, you have to practice the fundamentals
- Guys still have to have their gaps, even though they are on the move
Read and React to Any Screen Play
- The answer has to be built in to your defensive fundamentals
- Don’t try to make your kids recognize all the different types of screens. Just go where your reads take you
