Leadership isn’t easy. It isn’t natural for everyone. But, there are ways to help your players improve their leadership ability throughout their time in your program (it all starts with confidence and competence.)
In this episode, Joe and Daniel discuss what it takes to be a leader, how to improve the leadership of your team, and how that leadership can show up on Friday nights.
Using Squad Leaders
- Extreme Ownership makes us find a way to develop leaders
- Leadership is influence - good or bad
- Easier to rotate through Squad Leaders rather than Captains
Trust Your Athletes to Take on Leadership
- You’re going to let them fail, and help them critically think through resolutions
- Give them Every Day Tasks that you can evaluate
- Retribution to failure is a must. They must understand the non-negotiables can fail
- This is a great place to “ask a player for help,” which can get a player to straighten up
Create a System of On-Field Leadership
- There is almost always a leader for communication on Friday night. Whoever you trust the most likely speaks first, and they should be a Squad Leader
- Game Day communication is a concept. Make it fit YOUR kids every year.
