The Football Coaching Podcast with Joe Daniel
An undisciplined defense can bring even the best program to its knees. But, as schemes become more and more complex to try to match the offenses running all over the field, the byproduct is often undisciplined chaos.
On this episode Joe and Daniel discuss fixing tackling and executing through ASKA, fixing alignments, and ensuring players are doing their job and not their neigbors’ jobs through the umbrella principles.
• Sometimes you’ve done everything you can do with the Xs and Os, but the offense just wins a down.
• The first thing you have to address is what’s simple, organized, and makes sense to you, isn’t being understood by the players.
• You should know what type of defense you are, and it has nothing to do with numbers on the line, at LB, or in the backfield. Your rules for run fits, like spill, force, and alley, should be well understood by your defense.
• Lynn Shackleford opened our eyes to the “70% off all TDs against my team were due to incorrect pre-snap alignment.” We’ve since checked our own film and have confirmed it to be a fairly common problem.
• Alignment is one of the easiest levers to change for the ASKA principle, and it’s can have immediate results
• The Umbrella run fit system allows you to show an easy to understand diagram that simplifies football for your players
• Every player has a role, and if they do someone else’s job then no one does theirs.
• Our Special Teams Aren’t Special
• My Players Won’t Buy In to the System
• We Don’t Have Enough Players to Win
