Building a culture takes a long time. “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” is such a comparable phrase, because you can’t change things overnight. But, with the right tools, you can expedite your turn around time.
On this episode Joe Daniel and Daniel Chamberlain talk through Building a Culture with the Players’ Creed, how to establish the team’s identity, and getting you players to buy into your culture and the creed.
The Players’ Creed
- 5 things that are our identity
- Randy Jackson had 7, 1 for each day
- We don’t get our kids for 7 days… or at least shouldn’t
- Make it an acronym, but it can still be a base word
- Similar to the NCO Creed for military coaches
- No one is more professional than I
- Competency is my watch word
- "Officers of my unit will have maximum time to accomplish their duties; they will not have to accomplish mine"
Establish Your Team’s Identity
- This stuff isn’t mind-blowing, it won’t wow you, it’s just the fundamentals
- The Creed let’s the kids, parents, and staff know what is important this season
Get Your Players to Buy into the Players’ Creed
- If the Creed doesn’t fit your team, your staff, your community… it can come off as a bunch of corny stuff that you just say
- To get the players to buy in:
- Show it to the coaching staff and make sure everything fits THIS team
- Show it to the Squad Leaders
- Bring it to the team
