We Cant Stop Dual-Threat QBs

Depth wins championships. It doesn’t matter how talented your starters are — if you’ve got no one ready to step in when it counts, you’re in trouble. Backups matter. Depth matters. And if you’re not preparing those guys now, you’ll pay for it later.

On this episode of The Football Coaching Podcast, Daniel Chamberlain and Joe Daniel talk about how to build depth on your roster, get your backups game-ready, and keep your team competitive no matter the numbers. You’ll hear why the Coach Simple philosophy is the fastest way to boost confidence and performance, how to train your scout team to become tomorrow’s starters, and how to adapt your drills when roster sizes are smaller than you’d like.

The Coach Simple Philosophy

  • Keep schemes simple so players can learn multiple positions and step in quickly.
  • Use interchangeable pods (OL, WRs, DBs) so backups can shift roles when injuries occur.
  • Avoid over-specialization—train players to execute core fundamentals across positions.

Develop Depth Even if You Don’t Have Numbers

  • Break practice into “one-on-one games” (key reads, block destruction, tackling, etc.) to maximize reps for all players.
  • Use fast-paced, progressive drills instead of relying only on team or group periods.
  • Differentiate drill levels so varsity and JV/backups can each work at the pace they need.

Use Your Scout Team to Develop Future Starters

  • Run scout team using your own terminology and techniques, not the opponent’s.
  • Ensure scout team reps are developmental, not just service reps for starters.
  • Scout work helps younger players gain experience at positions they may fill in the future (OL depth, linebackers, QB packages, etc.).
