The Football Coaching Podcast with Joe Daniel
Three Safety Defenses have started making a name for themselves at places like Iowa State University. But, high schools across the land are also incorporating more of the scheme in their defense. Sometimes a new thing is good, especially if it fits the “Coach Simple, Play Fast, Win!” ideology.
On this episode Joe and Daniel are joined by PJ Gibbs, the creator of the Fast and Physical defensive system, to discuss the Three Safety Defense, how it can help your team, and how to sprinkle some into your current scheme this year.
• When using a three safety defense, you have 5 DB type kids on the field at once.
• Generally paired with a 6 man box in a 3-3 Stack
• Three High shell that can rotate to common Cover 1, Cover 3, or Cover 4 coverages
• If you lack size on your team, you can get more speed and athleticism on the field.
• You get an abundance of answers for RPOs, to counter the modern trends
• You also get answers to multiple TE formations
• You can start by simply changing alignments of some of your DBs
• You don’t have to change what coverages you’re running, just assignments within them
• We recently had on Coach Vass to talk blitz paths and how to install them, check it out here!
• If you’re looking for a change up defense, and three safety doesn’t fit yet, try this episode on 2-High Safety alignment.
• Cover 2 Defense is straight from the, “Oldie but a Goodie,” group. Modern versions seem to be lighting up High School football. Here is our episode breaking it all down.
