The Football Coaching Podcast with Joe Daniel
There are MANY situations that play out during a football game. It’s hard to pinpoint any one that’s the MOST or LEAST important. But, without a doubt, playing defense in the Red Zone is very important.
On this episode Joe and Daniel discuss the importance of Red Zone Defense, why we’re forced to make changes to our base defense in the Red Zone, and how you can scheme those changes up for your next game.
• Field dimensions are the first big change for a defense in the Red Zone. The field shrinks, giving you a reduced chance of getting burnt deep.
• With a shrinking field, you also have less or smaller zones to cover, and can use less defenders to defend them.
• Bend but don’t break, no cover zones, and time to make decisions are all fleeting ideas when the End Zone is closing in.
• You have less time to react to what you’re seeing, so you can’t have as many options for your players
• Any passing route that stems from, or is successful due to the threat of the fade ball can be mentally eliminated by defenders. The offense isn’t likely running a 22-26 yard vertical from the 1-15 yard line. Now, you can play the hitches, slants, etc
• Find out when you can replace your FS with another LB
• When does being in Zone defense hurt you more than just playing man?
