The Football Coaching Podcast with Joe Daniel
Quarters coverage, with man or zone match principles, can be one of the best defensive coverages in football if you get the proper reps and communication. But, there are even options within the coverage, a dime package as Joe was introduced to it, that allows you to be more efficient and look more complex.
On this episode Joe and Daniel talk all about Quarters coverage, the new dime package, and how you can stay versatile in the ever changing arms race between offense and defense.
• Multiple words for base Quarters, Cover 4, and/or Pattern Match coverage
• Quarters at its base, if 4 receivers run vertical, then 4 defenders run vertical with them.
• Most people base out of a read-2, or Palms, pattern match look.
• You can run Sky, Robber, Blue, or may other variations out of the base JDFB Package
• You can carry as many checks and variations as you need, but you’ll want to be careful and not overloading your team
• Tag the Safety Roll
• Start everything in the 2-high quarters shell and use post-snap movement to change the look for the QB into a variation of Cover 3
• Play catch technique with your CBs, and let the Safeties roll to the cover 3 spots
• Tampa 2 is also available with a double CB catch call, let the Safeties go to both outside deep 1/3s and the MLB fills the middle ⅓.
