The Football Coaching Podcast with Joe Daniel
Every coach identifies the games on their schedule each year that are winnable, and those that just aren’t. We often have that game on the schedule that if we found a way to win, would be considered an upset. But, what is the magic behind the upset, and how can we get there?
On this episode, Joe and Daniel discuss what makes up an upset, why it’s so important for your program, and how to approach the big game weeks.
• Games on a schedule are generally categorized into three categories
• Should Win
• Could Win
• Shouldn’t Win
• Upsets generally occur when a team wins a “shouldn’t win” game
• Consider college ball, one Top-25 team beating another Top-25 team isn’t really an upset… they’re all basically built the same
• The momentum from a big win can help you garnish more wins just this season.
• Winning a big time game can help win over the community, admin, donors, etc.
• All the things you’ve been using to make your team better should see more buy-in from the players moving forward
• You aren’t going to change who you are on a single game week just to knock off a giant.
• Correcting a series of small problems on your team, “cracks in the foundation,” can help you play your best game.
