The Football Coaching Podcast with Joe Daniel
The playoffs are a magical time for football coaches, players, and teams. But, they do not come without their own hurdles. It’s always great to coach the extra games, but you’ll find there’s a little more to it than your regular game week.
On this episode Joe Daniel and Daniel Chamberlain breakdown the advantages and disadvantages to playing a new or unknown opponent, as well as some things you can do to better prepare for the game.
• The element of the unknown when preparing yourself, your staff, and your players for the game ahead.
• Getting proper film can be an issue, because you don’t likely have a lot of common opponents. This can also make it difficult to judge the quality of the team or individual players on their team.
• Travel is going to be different, and likely excessively longer, than what you’re used to.
• If you happen to have a common opponent, you can get a real assessment of how each of your teams played them.
• Our scheme is very multiple, so the film they get will have A LOT to breakdown and prepare for, and we will likely change things again before the game.
• Talk to outside coaches to get a perspective of their team. Call up the guys that played them well. Call the ones that played them poorly. Get a well rounded view.
• Talk to college recruiters about the kids they may or may not have going to the next level.
• Use your youth, Junior High, Freshman, and Junior Varsity coaches to get the most efficient job done throughout the week, and more eyes on Game Day.
