Using Tags to Expand Your Offensive Scheme in Football

In the modern game, tags make the world go round. Whether you’re tagging formations, pass routes, run blocking, or RPOs… Tags can create a whole new offensive world for you and your team, without adding another base play to the playbook.

On this episode, Joe Daniel and Daniel Chamberlain discuss the importance of using tags in your offense, what tags are, and how you can start using them TODAY!

What are tags and how do they help your offense?

•With tags, you can run your base plays with a majority of your players, and change the assignment of 1 or more at any time.
• If you consider ASKA, changing any of the 4 levers is usually just a tag. Offense is no different.
• Coach Chamberlain’s system carries 4 base run plays (Power, GT Counter, Inside Zone, and Outside Zone) but can run multiple different schemes with simple tags (GH Counter is tagged off of power, G “Buck” Sweep is tagged off of OZ)

Why do we need to use tags?

• The first answer is simplicity for the players and coaches on your team. You shouldn’t need to learn 400 plays to run a High School offense. Run less plays, and tag them up to bring out the variety.
• Scout Teams can use your regular offense, and tag their way into an opponent’s alignment or plays. You gain more reps with your 2’s running your own stuff, and no one feels like they’ve been learning another team’s offense for a week at a time.
• Expand the playbook without expanding the playbook.

How can you start using them to add to your offense?

• First move some formations around. Try tagging them in tight, swapping receivers locations, or bringing and extra player in the backfield. Now you’ve already created multiple more looks for the defense to look at.
• Try changing 1 or 2 routes on your favorite pass concept. Y-Cross is Awesome, but Y-Cross with the drag running into Double Posts is a whole new play… except you only changed the job of 1-2 players on your offense.
• Change up your run game by messing with your mesh. Tag it “Q” to have the Q run the ball. Also Carry a type of follow or lead concept. Just make them tags off of your base plays.
