“QB Guru” is a title that’s often thrown around… and seems to be rarely regulated. We aren’t QB Guru’s on the podcast, and we’re big on “hire a professional.” So, we brought the professional to you!
On this episode, Joe and Daniel are joined by Mitch Wieland to discuss developing your QBs, what fundamentals are absolutely necessary for them to have, and how soon you can start.
What should we be looking for in QB prospects?
- You need to pay attention to two major factors when looking for your next Quarterback to develop:
- Basic ability to throw the ball. The days of completely changing a kid's mechanics are all but gone. Find someone who can throw it and make them better throwers.
- Decision making is the second biggest trait a new Quarterback should have naturally. Even if they make bad decisions, getting a kid to pull the trigger is the hardest part. Once they begin to make any decisions, you can coach them into better decisions.
What should be the progression of my QB’s development?
- You should be coaching 4 primary things:
- Throwing fundamentals
- Footwork
- Head Position
- Rotational Force
- Pocket Presence
- Avoidance drills
- Step-up in the pocket
- Arm Strength
- Louie Simmons “strength is never a weakness”
- Max Effort day - max some type of deep ball throw
- Arm Angles
- Defenses
- SOC
- Safety
- Overhang
- Corners
- MOF/MOC
- Corner Alignment
- Trigger Read
What does a practice look like for Quarterbacks?
- Indy is different every day, tailored to what the QB needs to improve from last week, and beating what the defense does best this week
