Just like the offensive episode from last week, this episode is all about trimming down that expansive playbook you’ve built over the last 12 months.
On this episode Joe and Daniel discuss the process of playbook management, what you can do to trim your playbook without cutting it too much, and when to expand what you’re running.
What are the must keeps in your playbook?
- The base defense is the primary (and maybe only) MUST KEEP
- Base Front
- Base Coverage
- Base Run fits
- Everything else isn’t a MUST KEEP, but you’ll likely want to carry more than just a base
What should you build your defensive playbook around?
- You should build around your personnel first, and they should match your base defense really well
- Next you should build around the weaknesses of your base front and coverage. Know your weaknesses and have ways to take them away
- A simple blitz and/or stunt package is the next thing to build out.
How to pick the extra things to carry and when do we expand?
- Expansion generally comes about as a function of necessity. Add to as you need it, and pair it (place it in buckets) with the rest of your system
- Don’t get caught up in every newfangled thing that trickles down from the big leagues. Coach what you know, and what you need.
