Coaching Multiple Interior Defensive Line Alignments

Defensive lines come in various shapes and sizes… and techniques and alignments and stances and stunts and…

On this episode Joe and Daniel discuss the different defensive fronts that are in use today. They discuss the odd and even fronts, odd (different) fronts gaining popularity, and the reasoning behind all these alignments.

What are the different interior defensive fronts?

• There are many options for each of your interior defensive linemen, and they can be adjusted individually
• Alignment can vary from heads-up, shaded inside or out, tilted or square
• You can tag up the defensive front depending on your backers
• Everyone is building Over or Under fronts, but can get there from multiple places

Why do we use multiple alignments for our IDL?

• Playing the 3-Tech on the strong side puts your best DL to the run strength to prevent ISO, down blocks, and reach blocks.
• Using interior shades, 2i or 4i, can make a difficult down block and create a road block for a pulling guard.
• Double 2i is great against option teams and veer teams, because your LBs can now flow and gap exchange with the DEs.

How can I pair these alignments with LB and S run support?

• Two-gapping is still an option that allows you to cancel a gap and get backers/safeties free
• Defensive line play has changed over the years, from block absorbers to expected tacklers
• Stunts and Twists can change your DL alignment, but it’s primarily to get a DL or LB loose in the backfield.
