We Cant Stop Dual-Threat QBs

Cover 3 has silently, or maybe less so, become the go-to defense of a majority of coaches across the world. Whether it’s run heavy divisions, fear of playing man, or tired of watching Cover 2 Corners getting blown up by the run game, coaches are converting… and for good reason.

In this episode, Joe and Daniel are joined by Coach Kahn Chace to discuss the fundamentals of Cover 3, what benefits it brings to your defensive package, and how to coach the basics to any age or skill of a player.

What is Cover 3 Coverage

  • The simplest version of Cover 3 Coverage is a 3 deep, 4 under coverage with a Free Safety and both Corners bailing to cover deep thirds.
  • Cover 3 can be run as a Spot Drop Coverage, or a pattern match coverage if you want to add some complexity.
  • Base Cover 3 is a great Run stopping defense

Why do we need Cover 3 Coverage in our defensive package?

  • There are Pros and Cons to the defense, just like any other:
  • Pros:
  • Complexity if needed, but simple foundationally. “Split field” look can be obtained, but it’s really just a spot drop for your players.
  • If you need to reset a program, due to lack of talent or performance, you can use the Cover 3 Coverage to simplify and let your players play fast.
  • You can keep 8 players around the LOS with eyes in the backfield to help stop the run.
  • “Check Roll” as a trips coverage, or sometimes just as a base call, can help you get two defenders over a deep threat.
  • Can show Middle of Field Closed (MOFC) or Middle of Field Open (MOFO) pre-snap to dictate what the offense believes they can run.
  • Cons:
  • Horizontal stretch can open up holes in your zones
  • Some route concepts can give you problems if not repped continuously
  • Four Verts
  • Curl
  • Waggle
  • Flood
  • Y-Shallow
  • Alignment is key, and kids can get lazy in-game, especially if they play both sides of the ball

What are some coaching points of a basic Cover 3 Coverage?

  • Keeping a defense simple allows you maximum time to coach the small details. Don’t be afraid to play your base defense and let the kids make plays.
  • There is a “No Cover” zone in the Cover 3 defense, specifically the 5 yds adjacent to the LOS. Keep your overhang players OUT of the no cover zone.
  • Alignment is going to be very important with your DB’s. Keep your C’s deep enough to stay on top of any route, and out of the “no man’s land”.
