Coaching Combo Blocks in Your Offensive System

The Football Coaching Podcast with Joe Daniel

Preparing for Playoff Opponents

Combo blocking is the key to your Zone run game, and maybe your gap scheme too. They could be the most important blocks your offensive line will make all year. But, the most important part of any system needs to be coached the hardest.

On this episode Joe and Daniel discuss what combo blocks are, why we use them, and how to coach them to ensure they are executed correctly on game day.

What are combo blocks?

• Offensive Line blocking 2 vs 2 against a defensive lineman and a LB.
• Combo blocks are the next step to Man to Man blocking, allowing players to help each other be successful
• Installing a set of rules to help players decipher a defensive front and ensure all players are blocked

Why do we use combo blocks, and why do we climb to the second level?

• Combos help players more efficiently use their movements to assist the OLinemen around them
• We climb to second level because we have to block as many Defenders as possible. Movement by defenders make man-to-man blocking inefficient and sometimes impossible.

How can we coach our kids to communicate and execute combo blocks?

• Give simple rules, that cover as many situations as possible
• If you can’t climb to second level, use another method, like RPOs
• You have to handle the first level first. Get to second level only when you have to
• Communication is the most important part of combos and climbing.
