The Football Coaching Podcast with Joe Daniel
Bracket coverages are an advanced way to help lock down, or eliminate the threat of, a star WR. You can also use it to cover a bunched group of WRs.
On this episode Joe and Daniel talk all things double coverage, what it is, why you need to carry it, and how to best utilize it in your base defenses.
• You can double cover any offensive player with multiple defenders, but you must have a plan.
• High/Low or Inside/Outside coverages allow the defense to cover one player regardless of his route
• Can also be used to cover a group of receivers, when they’re compressed, stacked, bunched, etc
• You’re going to face too many formations that are built to break your coverages
• A stud receiver can make for a long night. Take them away and let the rest of your defenders test what the offense can do.
• First, you have to identify what forms of bracket coverage you actually need. Can you handle a star receiver, or a group of receivers, without committing two players to one, or three players to two
• You can use things like trap coverage to keep change up your Cover 3, and keep players on top of an opponent WR.
