We Cant Stop Dual-Threat QBs

Throughout our careers, we have both stumbled upon greater understandings of the game of football, the schemes that fit into it, and the path of being a coach. We call these our “Aha Moments.”

On this episode, Joe and Daniel talk about their individual “Aha Moments” on Offense, Defense, and in regards to the total program.

Offensive things that “You didn’t know you didn’t know?”

  • Joe:
  • The Offensive Line is the most important group.
  • Gap names and numbers change from system to system
  • Terminology is not universal, and it shows up in every aspect of football.
  • Daniel:
  • Concepts are much easier to learn than single plays, and all plays are          connected by concepts.
  • Tags can open up your offensive playbook, without over coaching or over    installing new plays, concepts, or schemes.
  • Numbers, leverage, and space are the keys to winning a football game          schematically.

Defensive things that “You didn’t know you didn’t know?”

  • Joe:
  • Numbers on fronts/boxes don’t matter. We’re all building the same boxes with whatever front we decide to use
  • Missed tackles only happen in 1-on-1 situations, and 1-on-1 situations shouldn’t happen often
  • Daniel:
  • Coaches matter more than scheme. If the coaches on staff can’t coach your scheme, it’ll never work anyway

Program things that “You didn’t know you didn’t know?”

  • Joe:
  • The best coaches still can’t control it all, but they are very likely trying
  • Daniel:
  • There are bad coaches everywhere, at every level, at every position. 30 years of experience means nothing if you aren’t using it for the right reasons.
