Coach Simple. Play Fast. Win.

You hear it in every episode of The Football Coaching Podcast. You’ll read it in most of my emails. It’s on the top of every page on our website.

It is my coaching philosophy. It has become a philosophy I try to live by. The core principles that govern every decision at JDFB, summed up into 5 words.

What does it mean?

Keep your coaching schemes and teaching simple so that your kids understand it. Keep it simple so that your coaches can teach it in a way the kids get it, too.

When the players understand what they need to do, and when they truly believe they can do it… they play with confidence. Confidence is the king of playing fast.

Confused players are the opposite. Confused players play slow, soft, sloppy and scared. Those are coach killers. The Four S’s of Coaching Death. You don’t want that.

Confident kids fly around. They show up at the point of attack on defense with a purpose. They hit the hole on a run play because they know it’ll be there.

Confident players communicate their blocks up front. They call out the offensive tendency before the snap because they know what’s about to happen.

Confident teams play fast on game day. They execute on the field without hesitation. They make fast decisions and carry out the assignment.

Faster players WIN more football games. That’s just science.

Coach Simple. Play Fast. Win.

But…

What if you could play even faster?

There’s another level beyond just keeping it simple and building confidence.

An old coaching cliche is “You can’t teach speed.” Not true. By now, you know
that is a myth. It’s a crutch only the laziest coaches still lean on (and lazy coaches ain’t reading all this).

You also probably know the ol “Send ‘em to track” trick doesn’t work. Track is linear speed. Linear speed is not football. Football is acceleration, deceleration, change of direction.

Football is athletic movement in small spaces. Not the 40-yard dash.

So…

If you can teach speed, and…

You know what football speed is…

How do we TEACH FOOTBALL SPEED to play even faster (and win more games)?

You can make marginal improvements by running more sprints, getting stronger, or running a bunch of cone drills and stuff. It won’t be overwhelming improvement, though.

It won’t be the kind of improvement that you see on film. More important, it won’t be the kind of improvement that blows your opponents away when THEY see it on film.

To make the big improvement, you have to break it down. Break it down to the tiniest pieces.

Then rebuild them. Rebuild the running mechanics of every player on your football team in a whole new way. Remove all the bad habits. Replace them with core principles of running.

The Coach Simple approach to teaching football speed.

Dale Baskett has done it. His Athletic Speed and Movement training program
teaches football speed by breaking down the mechanics first. Then rebuilding every player on your team.

So they all play faster.

Tomorrow, I’m a special offer for “The Godfather of Speed” Dale Baskett’s own Athletic Speed and Movement training program.
