Subject: Football coaching cheat code
Date: October 15, 2026

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, select, start.

If you know, you know.

That’s the Konami Code. Or as I knew it when I was a little kid… the Contra Code.

Entering that gave you 30 lives. The ‘select’ part was critical because I sucked at video games.

Ben was my best friend growing up. He was good at video games. I had to have him there for 2-player, or I still couldn’t beat the game. With thirty lives and three continues.

I loved that cheat code when I was a kid. Without it, I would have never seen past the 2nd level of my favorite game.

Real life does not work that way. Coaching football definitely does not work that way.

Lots of coaches are out there looking for the cheat code.

What’s the best drill for…

What defense will stop…

And the always popular, what offense should I run with bad players?

There is one, and only one, cheat code in coaching. There are no special drills. No miraculous X’s and O’s magic bullets.

The only cheat code is to have better players. Significantly better players. Talent fixes a lot of bad coaching.

Don’t have a stack of D-1’s on your sidelines? Bad news. No cheat code for you.

That means you have to be a real ball coach. Learn to solve problems. Make adjustments.

Most important, you have to build confidence. Teach. Build relationships.

Cheat codes make the game easier. They make it so that anybody can win.

Unless you stumbled upon the genetic lottery, cheat codes aren’t happening in coaching. And that’s a good thing. There will always be a market for guys that can coach.

That’s why I fell in love with the Coach Simple Philosophy, too. It’s why I encourage so many coaches to run the 4-2-5 Defense System.

The system keeps it simple so your kids understand. It keeps it simple so your coaches, regardless of experience level, can teach it to those kids.

Understanding what to do - and believing in the people teaching it to you - is how you build confidence. Confidence is everything. Confidence might BE the cheat code, but it isn’t sexy enough.

Confident players play faster on game day. Faster players WIN more football games.

Coach Simple. Play Fast. Win.
