There's more than one way to teach run fits. But when I hear a coach say they can't spill because they're too slow...

I know you don't understand spill.

You don't understand the umbrella.

The concepts of the umbrella aren't revolutionary. A few twists on a classic model.

I learned it from TCU coaches when I was studying their dominant 4-2-5 Defense a decade ago.

The umbrella just makes sense.

The simplicity. I can teach this to an entire team in 10 minutes.

In 10 minutes, every player on the defense understands his role. Where he fits in the defense. His assignment.

He knows what to do. Now we go to work on how to do it.

The drills have meaning for him. Alignments make sense.

Keep it simple so the players know what to do. They have confidence to do their job.

Confident players play faster.

Umbrella run fits check those boxes.

Use alignment levers to make up for the remaining speed deficiency.

Then add the key piece. The most important element in any spilling defense.

Force.

That's the equalizer. You don't spill them to the sidelines. You set the edge.

Too slow to force? Not possible.

Align wider.

Align where they are going. Meet them on the way.

Because the fastest kid in the county is in that backfield waiting to take a toss. Or a jet sweep.

No defensive end is going to force that one. So we put that overhang safety or outside linebacker out wide. Where that fast kid wants to go.

Meet him on the way.

Cap it off with the alley fit. Between the last spill player and the force. Ties the whole thing together.

Teach alignment, stance and key reads that put your guys in position to do their assignment. Levers.

An assignment they know. One they're confident they can do.

ASKA.

Alignment. Stance. Key Read. Assignment.

It all ties together.

No team is too slow for that.
