If you've been coaching at big schools with huge crowds and an 8-lane track between you and the stands, you might not know this...

The fans are not always supportive.

Do you coach with the fans right on top of you? Are the visitor's sidelines the baseball infield dirt? Do you coach on Wednesday nights or Saturday mornings when the only people in the stands have a kid on the field?

Then you've heard it.

You also know this...

Fans are just that. And only that.

They are FANS.

The average person in the stands thinks he knows a lot of football. He played a little ball in high school.

He watches his favorite college team every Saturday. On Sunday, he barely
leaves the couch.

Put him in a staff meeting? Bring him to a clinic?

He’s completely lost. Knows absolutely nothing about the actual job of coaching.

He can't even run a drill.

If you threw him in the deep end of a practice and told him to fix whatever he was yelling about on Friday night? You'd see the worst practice in history.

He doesn't know anything about alignment. He sure as heck can't coach the Offensive Line footwork. He can't create a practice schedule or organize a call sheet.

He's not going to know how to break down film. Because fans only know how to watch the game as a fan.

Whether you have 6 weeks of coaching under your belt, or 40 years... you are different.

You speak the language.

You might not be fluent yet. But if you listen to The Football Coaching Podcast and read these emails, you're getting there.

You are immersed in football coaching. Like living in a foreign country, you learn the language faster that way

So next time you hear that guy... ignore it. Listening to it, or even worse reacting to it, only hurts you.

Remember one thing:

He doesn't even speak the language.
