On Monday night during our Chalk Talk Q&A Call, I had a realization.
2017 me is an idiot. I hate him.

Why did I have this shocking, upsetting realization?

One of our JDFB Platinum coaches asked about adding a bubble screen to his call sheet. To show the technique we teach, I opened up my 2017 season film.

Before I get into it, quick reminder:

That system was created long after 2017. And that is an important piece of the story.

I sent my filter for 78/79 Z-Bubble, our play call for the bubble screen to the slot receiver. Boy was I surprised…

One game came up. Three plays.

The first one showed the technique, by my Quarterback just missed on the throw. Badly.

So I brought up the second one. Perfectly executed, great film to show our JDFB members.

Not only did we execute the throw and catch, my receiver broke it for a long touchdown.

1 for 2, 70 yards, 1 TD. Let’s check #3.

It wasn’t a bubble screen at all. The play was tagged wrong. Should have been 79 Z-Bubble & Go.

The outside receiver faked the block, then broke down the sideline. He got behind the corner and made the catch for a long gain.

Why do I hate myself?

Because that was it. I’m sure we ran it a couple more. But not nearly enough.

Self-scouting is critical. In 2017, I blew it.

I was too busy. We had to get ready for the next opponent. No time to waste.

Now I have a game film system. Self-scout always comes first.

Then we have a system for breaking down the opponent. And it saved me up to 11 hours of weekend film study.

Plus, by Sunday night I’m done. No more staring at the ceiling the night before the game wondering if I should jump out of bed and watch it one more time.
Job’s done. System executed.
