Why We use Shifts and Motions in Our Offense

Shifts and Motions, also known as “Window Dressing,” are growing exponentially in High School football. Not only are they growing in frequency, but in complexity as well. Throwing shifts and motions into an already efficient offense can lead to explosive results!

On this episode Joe and Daniel are discussing what shifts and motions are, why they use them in their offenses, and how they gameplan to make use of shifts and motions.

What are Shifts and Motions, and what are the rules that govern them?

 • Motions
        • still moving when the ball is snapped
        • Cannot advance towards the line of scrimmage
 • Shifts
        • Must come to a stop for at least 1 second before the ball is snapped
        • Anyone can move anywhere, following certain rules

Why do we use them in our offense?

• We use shifts and motions to get the defense to move! A player moving means we      can possibly get numbers, or leverage, somewhere that we didn’t have it before.
• Identifying man or zone coverage via shifts and motions is a pretty advanced                concept, but it’s doable.
• We can try to get a defense to declare, or change, their rotation.
• Make kids check into and out of coverages.

How are we using shifts and motions in gameplanning?

• Not every player is a 1, so we can use shifts and motions to add hats to try to                  balance our numbers
• Move a better blocker over onto their stud defensive player
• Keep your defensive scheme simple so you can move on to more advanced tactics.
