A step-by-step process that I have used for many years now, after wasting so much time in the first part of my coaching career. And this System can be repeated, time after time.
This is for a full scouting report on my own team. Plus self-scouting reports for anywhere from 10 to 20+ teams around the country. Running all different offenses and defenses. With opponents I know absolutely nothing about.
And it works. I’m not drowning. I know where to start the work. I know what to do every step of the way. And I know when the job is done.

Then it is on to the Self-Scout. Looking for levers to pull, adjustments that are going to have the biggest impact on our football team each week. It is by far the most important watch through of film I do for my team each week.
Once the exchange film comes in, time to get to work on the opponent. The process is similar. First watch. Then look for weaknesses.
There are worksheets I use to follow through the entire process. It is the same every time. There is a start and an end. This is a System.
Plus you can split the work up among your staff so that everyone has input. Everyone knows what is happening within their position group, and for the entire team. They know the opponent, too.
Some of the advantages of the system I created include...
- Figure out the identity of your opponent each week. Get into the minds of the opposing coaches, know who they are, and who they think they are.
- Sleep better knowing that your football team has an identity. They know who they are and they’re ready to prove it on game day.
- Break the game down by the most important situations that happened, and how your team handled them. Situational football is critical in today’s analytics-focused game and your team will be prepared using this system.
- Organize your film watching with a detailed system to track play notes. When you bring up a specific play with your players or staff, go straight to the play and not waste time flipping through the playlist.
- Leave no stone unturned when it comes to self-scouting. Identify your tendencies using formations, shifts and motions before the opponent figures it out. Stay one step ahead by changing it up and breaking tendencies every week.
- Special Teams can change the game. I’ll share a strategy for blocking kicks that could swing the momentum in your favor and even steal a win for your football team.
- Every kickoff is a chance to score. Break down your opponent’s kickoff team to figure out how you should align your Kickoff Return to ensure you secure the football for the next possession, and give your team the best chance to score.
- The ONE thing you must know to effectively attack the pass protection of your opponent. If you know this one key piece of information, you can attack protections to get more pressure on the QB.
